6 tips to stop painful menstrual periods

I used to live with painful menstruations for many years & I thought that it was normal, because my mum told me that she also had back pain during her menstruations. I believed I was just unlucky with bad “genes” because some of my friends did not have any problem at all or maybe never mentioned it. But I am not the kind of person who easily accepts limitations. If you know me, you know that I am quite active, I love travelling, being in nature, hiking, horse riding and dancing very much. So I started looking for solutions that would enable me to be free to move and live without any pain as I wanted.

Here are 6 solutions that enabled me to reduce pain during my period. I am happy to share them with you because it has changed my life and I believe it could change yours as well :)

Grâce à un ami qui m'a initié au mode de vie zéro déchet respectueux de l'environnement, j'ai découvert le gobelet réutilisable en 2018. J'ai trouvé l'idée d'utiliser des protections réutilisables et respectueuses de l'environnement vraiment géniale et j'ai décidé de l'essayer. Je remplace les serviettes et tampons menstruels jetables par la cup en plastique. Ce n'est pas si facile à utiliser au début, mais au moins elle est réutilisable et moins chère à long terme. Mais mes crampes sont devenues plus intenses et c'était parfois peu pratique, surtout quand je voyageais... pas moyen de se laver les mains quand je faisais des randonnées en montagne...

J'ai essayé les culottes menstruelles des marques Fempo, sisters republic & Elia Lingerie et c'était la meilleure solution dont je pouvais rêver ! Plus de stress pour vider ma coupe, plus de stress de tacher mon pantalon quand je faisais du yoga ou les draps de mon amie. Un vrai sentiment de liberté !

Relaxing my body with warm water

An effective and immediate method to reduce pain during my period is to take a warm shower or a bath and to stay in bed with a hot water bottle on my belly. It gives me an immediate relaxing sensation and I feel that the water is draining the pain out. A colleague of mine, seeing that I was really in pain at work, recommended to buy a zero waste hot water bottle made of cherry pits. It looks like a pillow and you just have to put it 1 or 2 minutes in the microwave to warm it up and then, you can use it on your belly, on your lower back and even on your forehead to release headaches.

Practising soft Yoga poses (Iyengar Yoga, Yin Yoga, Yoga Therapy)

During my Yoga Teacher Training in 2018 in Indonesia, we had a specific class about Yoga for women. There I discovered a natural and effective solution for menstrual pain that nobody mentioned to me before … not even a gynecologist. So I tried the Yoga poses that were recommended by B.S.K Iyengar in his book "Light on Yoga" and noticed that my energy level changed a lot and that my pain was gone after the practice. As Geeta Iyengar , the eldest daughter of B. K. S. Iyengar, says “from the day menstruation begins until the day it ends … one should stick to the practice of those asanas that do not obstruct the menstrual flow and help a woman keep herself healthy. Only the asanas have to be done which do not make her run out of energy or bring any hormonal disturbance.”

During the first one or two days of the menses cycle, the symptoms are usually worse. The practice sequence for these days needs to be restful, involving supported supine postures, supported forward bends, supported alternatives to inversions over bolsters followed by savasana. When followed correctly and the asanas are held for the requisite time, the sequence can really relieve all of the symptoms. The groins are softened which reduces abdominal cramping. The legs are rested which quietens the brain. The nervous system is soothed and cooled. The poses are restful and we feel totally restored at the completion of the sequence.

Changing internal menstrual protections for external ones

Thanks to a friend that introduce me to the environmental friendly zero-waste lifestyle, I discover the reusable cup in 2018. I found the idea of using reusable and environemental friendly protection a really great idea and decided to give it a try. I replace disposable menstrual pads and tampons with the plastic cup. Not so easy to use it in the beginning but at least reusable and cheaper on a long run. But my cramps became more intense and it was sometimes unpractical especially when I was travelling ... no way to wash your hands and the cup when I was hiking in the mountains...

Thanks to some French women entreprenors, I discovered menstrual underwear in 2020. I tried the menstrual pants of the brands Fempo, sisters republic & Elia Lingerie and that was the best solution I could have dreamed of ! No more stress on emptying my cup, no more stress to stain my pants when I was teaching yoga or the sheets of my friend. A real freedom feeling !

Breathing in, breathing out

During the Corona lockdown, I did a 300 hours yoga therapy teacher training and discovered that some Pranayama (breathing exercises) originally made for post traumatic stress disorder also worked to calm down the pain during menstruations. I started exploring which exercises had the most impact on reducing the symptoms like anxiety, cramps and headache and I created a new "recipe" to stop pain anywhere only in a few minutes :) From this moment I decided to combine all what had helped me in one training online, so that every woman in the world could have access to it!

Embracing being a women

Last but not least, I realised that when I started to change my mind about my menstrations and not seeing them as a problem but as a gift I could better manage the symptoms. When I was young I suffered a lot during my period to be honest I sometimes wished I was a guy to avoid menstruations. For a few years ( I am 31 years old now),every time I have my period I am grateful, because I think great , my body is functioning and this is a good sign if I want to have children someday.
